Once a decade, the U.S. Census Bureau counts every person living in the United States, District of Columbia, and five U.S territories. In 2020, each home will receive an invitation to respond to a short questionnaire online, by phone, or by mail.
Why is the Census Important for Akron?
Besides the fact that it’s required by the Constitution, the census results determine how $675 billion is spent to support community programs, including but not limited to food assistance, schools, health care, roads, and much more. The Census count also impacts congressional representation and data that will impact our communities for the next decade.
Fast Facts
- March 12 – 20: Households will begin receiving official Census Bureau mail with detailed information on how to respond to the 2020 Census online, by phone, or by mail. By April 1, 2020, every home will receive an invitation to participate in the 2020 Census.
- The Census does not ask about citizenship status.
- Non-citizens are counted in the Census. The 2020 Census counts everyone living in the country.
- Children and newborns count!
- The Census Bureau is bound by Title 13 of the U.S. Code to protect your personal information and keep it strictly confidential. That’s every answer, to every question.

GAR Foundation is encouraging its community partners to spread the word about the Census. Nonprofits, schools, faith-based groups, and other organizations working with the public, have a unique opportunity to reach, inform, and combat any misinformation and fear among what the Census calls “hard to reach” populations – people living in poverty, experiencing homelessness, children under age 5, and immigrants and refugees.
