Each year, through our Educator Initiative Grant program, GAR Foundation comes across teachers who take initiative in their classrooms to address a problem or create a new program. These are teams of teachers all across Summit County who call others to action and energize them with the aim of improving teaching and learning.
Dave Ternent is one of those people. Dave is a 7th grade STEM teacher at Kimpton Middle School in Stow. He and his colleague Jake Miller wondered: what would happen if we provided a space for our students to explore, create, and learn authentic skills that will lead to an inspired transition to college and / or career?
In a region with a wealth of aerospace technology, Dave Ternent believes an introduction to aerospace engineering should be a priority for our students and community. Learn how Dave and his team at Stow Kimpton Middle School successfully implemented a GAR supported program by using problem-based, interdisciplinary, and authentic learning experiences to motivate and inspire students to apply science and math knowledge skills, while encouraging students to take pride in their work. See firsthand how students learn how aeronautical models go from a goal, to an idea, to a tested design and all the resources in takes to do such a project by utilizing 3D computer modeling programs, engaging local engineering professionals, and even testing ideas in a wind tunnel.
