Galen Roush

Co-Founder, GAR Foundation

Galen J. Roush (1900–1976) was a visionary entrepreneur and generous philanthropist whose determination and quiet leadership helped shape both American industry and his Akron community. He believed deeply in the dignity of hard work and in building opportunities for others, values that continue to guide GAR Foundation today.

In 1930, Galen and his brother Carroll co-founded Roadway Express, starting with just a handful of trucks and a modest office in Akron. Through discipline, innovation, and persistence, they grew Roadway into one of the nation’s most respected transportation companies. Galen’s success in business provided the means to invest in the city he loved, and with his wife, Ruth Coates Roush, he established the philanthropy that would become GAR Foundation.

Together, the Roushes supported causes that reflected their shared values—education, the arts, historic preservation, and community vitality. Galen’s pragmatic yet generous spirit ensured that Akron’s institutions could thrive and serve more people. Their giving laid the foundation for a legacy of community investment that endures today through the Foundation’s work.

Those who knew Galen remembered him as industrious, disciplined, and modest. Despite his remarkable success, he remained rooted in Northeast Ohio, committed to family, employees, and neighbors alike. He and Ruth raised four children and instilled in their family a deep sense of service and generosity.

Galen passed away in 1976 at the age of 75. His legacy lives on through GAR Foundation’s ongoing commitment to helping make Akron a smarter, stronger, and more vibrant place.
